The little stuff

It is amazing how many little things you rely on in your house without really thinking about it. Last week, I actually purchased a tweezers. I don’t remember ever buying a tweezers before – I just had one and used it from time to time.

Last Thursday at work, a coworker commented on my new haircut. I had to explain that I had not actually had a haircut; buying a hairdryer simply hadn't made it to the top of my to-do list yet. (However, you can be sure this prompted me to finally buy one.)

At one of our hotels, Annika found a safety pin on the floor, and excitedly rushed to me to say, “Mom, our first safety pin!!” Yes, I guess it’s time to start collecting things again.

  1. I tried to send a message to you, Jen, on this yeaterday but it turned out to go to me. Very weird-or I am just really stupid. Anyway, Jen, I have thought of you everyday since I heard. I am so glad you are doing so well but you always have been the strongest most amazing woman.
You always were the best writer as well and reading this confirms my thought that you must write a book. What a wonderful narrative and great insights.

  2. Jen - We have thought of you guys on and off for the past several weeks. We are in awe at how you all survived (Grete included) and so glad none of you were in the house. Your tragedy helps some of us take stock in our own lives to see, "what is really important?". It sounds like you have many friends and family helping you out during this trying time. Please count on 2 more (Craig and myself) to help in any way we can (I can get you a matching nail clipper to go with your tweezer!). God Bless you, Matt, and the girls as you go through this journey. Keep us updated and don't hesitate to ask for help, no matter how simple it sounds.

  3. I'm wondering if you'll allow me to use the hairdryer excuse for my daily mess of my mane?....I still have an entire closet of work clothes that would fit you - I have transferred my loyalty to easily cleansed scrubs... Hans and I are thinking of you. Beers, gin, laughs, sometime soon?? Melissa

  4. I laughed out loud about the hairdryer comment. You have a wonderful family and it sounds like everyone is managing through this Twilight Zone. We think of you all often.
    Much love,

  5. Jen,
It is with a mixture of tears and laughter that I just read your posts to date. When we only briefly locked eyes at church last week, I thought I'd have the opportunity to talk with you, but we did not. I'm sorry for the loss of your home, but obviously grateful that none of you were harmed. Well, Greta was but it sounds like she really is a Wonder Dog and will be just fine!
Can't wait to talk with you in person and looking forward to reading more about your adventure through all of this.
